"Scuff Scuff, That's Enough!"- Tips For Prepping Your Furniture Before Painting

Hey there!

Are you a little hesitant when it comes to prepping your furniture before you paint?

Repeat after me: “scuff scuff, that’s enough!”.

A very common misconception is that you need to strip or sand your furniture right down to the bare wood before you paint. While this is true for staining, Mango Paint is formulated to adhere to the original varnish or finish without extensive prep!

A very light “scuff” with a medium grit sanding sponge is more than enough to open some pores for the paint to adhere to! Seriously—just enough pressure to dull the finish without breaking through it.

The chair you see Melanie working on below took a grand total of 5 minutes to prep!

Pro Tip: wipe your piece with a clean, dry rag or micro fibre cloth after scuffing to remove all the dust before you start painting.

In addition to “scuffing” with a medium grit sanding sponge, giving your piece a wipe with warm water and mild dish soap to remove any old residues will do wonders in the long run too!

You’ll be surprised how much grime accumulates on your pieces over time and use—and removing this build up will help ensure the Mango Paint has a clean surface to bond with.

Pro Tip: for stubborn dirt or grime, wipe your piece with a little bit of Windex!

It truly is that easy—once you start, you’ll be surprised how little effort it takes to get your furniture ready for painting!

Feel free to email me any of your project related questions—I’m always happy to help!
