Empathy and Calm Seas for a baby's room.

Hi there!

Have you heard the birds chirping away recently?? I think they know something we don't . . . maybe spring really is just around the corner?!?

When I think of spring I think of flowers blooming and bright beautiful colours - you know, like the soft & pretty 'Calm Seas' of this restyled secretary desk:

I really love how this piece turned out! My client was looking for a pop of colour and a statement piece to add to her nursery - and I think we found it!

We even added a little sunshine inside this sweet secretary by painting out the inside in 'Empathy', a rich and soft beautiful yellow!

I often get asked if I bother painting out the inside of my restyled furniture . . . my decision usually hinges on 3 questions:

1. What condition is the interior in? (good, bad, ugly??)

2. Where did this piece come from? (passed down from grandma? online score? side of the road find?)

3. What is this piece going to be used for?

The answer to whether or not I paint out the inside of a piece lies in the answers to those three questions. This secretary was a great online purchase that was going to be used in a baby's room . . . so we painted the inside.

We even painted out the inside and outside of all the drawers - what a nice finishing touch!

Oooh! Don't even get me started on this hardware!! Hammered gold knobs?!? Yes pls!

(we still have some of these available at the studio if you feel the urge to add some bling to your things)

What'cha Workin' on Wednesday?!?

Aloha!

I'm not sure why I just said that, lol!

Anyhow, it's Wednesday, so let's take a look at what'cha been workin' on!

First up this week is a super creative dresser restyle using van Gogh paint, Mode Podge and a whole lotta Calvin and Hobbes

Andrea took her love of these comic book characters to a whole new level with this dresser! The framework was painted overall using 'And Your Little Dog Too', which is a gorgeous vibrant red from the van Gogh collection, and the drawers and top were completely Modge Podged with a collage of Calvin and Hobbes. So creative!

Andrea is also a photographer - can you tell from these great detail shots??

What an awesome project! Thanks so much for sharing this with us Andrea!

To check out some of Andrea's photography work you can pop over to her website here, or her Facebook page here!

And here's one last look - with the 'before' as well.

Next up this week is a beautiful secretary desk restyled by Belinda. This dresser was also painted using van Gogh paint, but this time in 'River Tides' which is one of my signature custom colours! I also love the painted hardware - what a gorgeous combination!

Belinda didn't have a  picture of her desk before she painted it (probably too excited to get started on her project as I often am, lol)! However she was able to find this picture that she swears is almost identical to what her desk looked like before . . .

Thanks for sharing Belinda - you did a fantastic job!

Speaking of van Gogh custom colours at Mango Reclaimed, this next dresser was painted in 'Calm Sea's', which is another one of my signature colours! I just love this somehow both soft and vibrant sweet green - it looks gorgeous with yellows or rich blues.

This piece was painted by some good friends of mine at Stan Portley's, over in London. Thanks for sharing!!

As always, thank YOU for sharing your projects with me - I love showing off all your hard work and creativity!

A restyled secretary - for shelter!

If you haven't already - you should mark your calendar! This Saturday (May 9th) Royal LePage is hosting a 'Garage Sale for Shelter' at 200 Dundas St. East in Whitby. 100% of the revenue from this sale will go to support local women's shelters and violence prevention programs.

I got in on the action and restyled this beautiful secretary desk for the sale.

This desk was in fairly rough shape when it was donated to the sale, but it had some good bones so I gladly accepted the challenge to restyle it in an effort to raise the value for charity.

Here's a few shots from when the desk was dropped off at the studio. You can see some of the marks and scratches on the desk (including two broken front legs), and a glimpse at the inside . . .

I wanted to use Fusion Mineral Paint to restyle this desk because I had been looking for an excuse to use the beautiful Laurentien colour and this was the perfect opportunity! In preparation to paint the desk, it was sanded overall to remove the existing varnish as well as smooth out some of the scratches and dents.

Here she is ready to paint {decorative front legs are still missing, but don't worry, we added them on before painting}:

One of the great things about Fusion paint is that for most projects your don't require a primer or a top coat! {awesome, right?!} Ok, here she is again all finished in gorgeous Laurentien:

Don't you just love the brassy golden hardware??

Oooh! Let's not forget the inside - painted in beautiful Bedford!

Incase your not convinced yet, here  are a few detail shots to really showcase her charms :)

This sweet secretary desk will be available for sale this Saturday at the Royal LePage 'garage sale for shelter' along with tons of other great treasures so be sure to stop by! It's going to be a great day of fundraising for a great local cause!

A secretary - Muse, and Starry Night end tables.

Hello!

It's been a while since I completed these projects so it's about time I share! First up is an old secretary desk in need of a restyle and brought to me by a customer for just that reason.  These sweet customers are no strangers to having their furniture custom restyled by Mango Reclaimed - you may recall a post about their restyled sewing table here.

When they brought their desk in, it looked something like this:

Great lines and good bones but a little banged up and a bit too dark. Actually, in the above picture we had already removed the hardware, sanded down the finish in preparation for painting and even did some minor repairs - such as reattaching a broken leg and adding a new trim piece around the bottom.

Muse was the colour choice for this desk to give it a lighter and brighter feel.  Muse is one of those colours that just looks great on everything. It's light and bright and almost a neutral - with a subtle and refreshing green undertone. Using van Gogh Fossil paint to paint out the desk along with some mild distressing helped to hide a lot of the small imperfections . . . .

The original hardware was pretty fantastic so we kept it just as it was. Beautiful!

While we're here, I also want to share with you some van Gogh painted end tables. These were done in a combination of Starry Night and Chivalry, and I just adore the little navy knobs. One of these tables was completed as a custom order and the other is available for purchase in the studio. If you're interested, contact us.

Thanks for tuning in! If you have questions about anything we do here at Mango Reclaimed we would love to hear from you!
